Match Day Banter – Newcastle v Southampton

To say Southampton have been this seasons surprise package is an understatement! After losing so many good players they have barely faltered at all this season and they currently sit in third place after the first 21 games. They also thumped us 4-0 at home and the return match looks like being another tough game. However, our form at home has been good (W5 D3 L1) so I am expecting our lads to put up a spirited fight and try and come away with all three points.

Apart from the African Cup absentees we have pretty much our usual players to select from with the added bonus of Santon being fit for duty. Whether he is selected or not is another matter but it would be good to see him get some minutes under his belt.  Here is who we have to choose from

Newcastle United: Alnwick, Krul, Coloccini, Dummett, Good, Haidara, Janmaat, Santon, Streete, Williamson, Anita, Bigirimana, Cabella, Colback, Sissoko, Vuckic, Ameobi, Armstrong, Ferreyra, Gouffran, Perez, Riviere.

Southampton do have some injury concerns. Morgan Schneiderlin (thigh) and Victor Wanyama (hamstring) are out and to be honest it is good to see that Wanyama is not going to play. He does a lot of good work in the middle of the park and breaks up a lot of opposition attacks. He won’t be missed as far as I am concerned. Here is who Southampton have to choose from.

Southampton : K Davis, Forster, Gazzaniga, Bertrand, Clyne, Fonte, Gardos, Targett, Cork, S Davis, Isgrove, McQueen, Reed, Tadic, Ward-Prowse, Elia, Long, Pelle.

Based on current form you would have to give this one to Southampton. In the last six games they have a very good record (W4 D1 L1) when you compare that to ours (W1 D1 L4) it seems that we will be up against it. But this is the Premier League and on any given day any team can win. So my prediction is a 2-1 victory and the first three points for John Carver.

Howay the Lads!

  1. Bris – Please explain to us all how the examples you used are positive? They’re just statements of facts, not positive direction or positive words. You will be more disappointed than most when your expectations aren’t met. The others who expect it and can see it for what it is will just shrug their shoulders and say “So what? We were expecting nothing better.”

As for Penfolds excuse for not bringing in any players, using the 25 squad excuse, well does that mean we had 26 when Ben Arfa was here? The man takes us for fools and decides to do an interview just before the date when you can cancel season tickets. How pathetic. Hope everyone cancels.
