What Benitez does better than McClaren according to Dummett

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s crucial match-up with Crystal Palace, Paul Dummett has spoken to the press about his new manager Rafa Benitez and what the Spaniard offers compared with his predecessor Steve McClaren.

Speaking to the Chronicle, the defender praised the ex-Real Madrid boss in how he was turning the squad into ‘better players’.

More specifically he has praised Benitez for the work he has done with the Newcastle back four.

With the Magpies conceding the second highest number of goals in the league this season (64 – only Villa have conceded more), it was imperative that a defence-minded coach in the mould of Rafa was brought into the club. After a clean sheet against Swansea and what should have been a clean sheet against Manchester City this month, there’s evidence to suggest that what’s being taught on the training ground is actually having a positive effect on match days.

“For me personally he talks about the positioning with each player and he works with the back four a lot.

“He tells us to be together and be more compact. Any manager has different opinions and growing up as players it can only help you learn from them. It will help me get better as a player too.”

  1. Also what was Pochettino doing running on the pitch? He knew Rose was in danger of getting sent off. I’m not sure you can do that can you?

  2. It is OK Stuart man, Fleet Street love Spurs and will probably set up a petition to have him on the sideline next game.

  5. So many sub plots to this season. If Everyon beat Leicester on Saturday they will play Sunderland on the back of two straight wins with bags of confidence… ❓

  6. Actually that would be the perfect scenario for us because if we beat Villa and Chelsea and Everyon beat Sunderland we don’t give two ***** what happens on the last day!

They’ll have recovered by the time we play them. They won’t be in a permanent temper for over two weeks, lol

  15. The last thing they will need or want is playing a game against a team who need to win. Rose off with a hammy, Alli and Dembele suspended, maybe Lamella and Walker too. They’ve completely lost the plot!

They could still win this though so I’m not sure why they’re acting like this.

I know the location would be his dream job but I would be stunned if he went to Everton after his mutual love affair with Liverpool.

  19. Look at the reaction of the Spurs players! anyone who thought they would be in the right frame of mind after losing the league are mad!!!

In fact they’ve completely let themselves down here.

    Congratulations Leicester

  20. If we pull off the great escape this year, we did it at about the same time Leicester did last year.

Anyone else looking at bookies odd tonight and tempted to put a sly bet on us “doing a Leicester”?

    lol

Truly amazing story – almost relegated last season and lifting the title this season.

Watching Leicester today. Great side. Mad as this sounds, I predict they will win the league this year or at least make the top 4.

You heard it here first. I make an early call.

I’m not impressed with McLarens tactics by the way. !

  25. Bravo Leicester, that is an amazing achievement with games to spare too 😎 Can’t imagine how it must feel as a fan to win it. No matter what happens from here on in, no one can take away what they have done.

Still, if you said it, you said it and even if it was just you being typical you you deserve some credit 🙂

  27. Most of the pundits had Leicester to get relegated and a lot thought Ranieri would be 1st manager sacked. I admit I took virtually no notice of them as it seems there is always an underdog team that starts the season well and falls off. It wasn’t until they played us that I even watched one of their games.

  28. All the more impressive when you think Leicester took a punt on players like Mahrez for £400k, Vardy and Huth. Even when Blackburn Rovers won the title, it cost Jack Walker a fortune and every other team in history, Man U/ Arsenal etc. have basically bought it.

I’m pretty sure I remember you posting a similar comment about Spurs on the 4th Sept, and one about the Gooners on the 5th and was the one about City on the 6th or 7th? … can’t remember now 😆

  30. Do you know that Vardy was the most expensive non-league player ever at 1 million?

      (Quote)

  31. Are the PL trying to make themselves look like fools on purpose? They give Vardy an extra match ban for calling the Ref a Fckin c@nt and do nothing for Drinkwater saying to the Ref “you’re a c@nt” after he was sent off.

  32. Quote of the day comes from my brother who’s been away on a 2 week long walk in the sticks.
” ****** me, you disappear for a couple weeks thinking everything will be relatively normal on your return, only to find Prince is dead, Leicester are Prem champions and Newcastle aren’t in the bottom 3. What a mad world we’ve come to live in”

  33. I was so happy to see Spurs players losing the plot totally. Shows how bad they have taken it and they’re young too. Won’t want to play two more games. Pochettino already talking about next season… 😀

      (Quote)

  34. According to the bookies us and Sunderland are now the same odds to go down. Big change since last week. I got 8/1 before the Swansea game. 😆

      (Quote)

  35. I do laugh that, for once, we got a game where Chelsea were the victims of ref intimidation and bad tackles.

      (Quote)

  36. Stuart: all Spurs need is a point off Southampton or an Arsenal loss for our game to be totally meaningless to them. They should also have had other players sent off but hopefully Dembele will be suspended anyway.

      (Quote)

  37. After to say though I do like Pochettino. He’s looking like a great coach and doesn’t two in for the all the bull **** spoken by most managers.

      (Quote)

  38. I’ve just seen the Lamella incident where he stood on Fabregas’ hand. It was impossible for him not to see his hand. It was clear really. Also just seen Walker wipe his nose with his fingers and throw the snot at Costa. Clear as day. Disgusting and I will be disappointed if the FA don’t look at that too.

      (Quote)

  39. Stuart: probably nothing will happen. Vardy was suspended for the extra game because that Ref did not put the swearing in his report and therefore they could do a retroactive ban. Supposedly, the Ref put Drinkwater’s swearing in his report and therefore the PL can take no further action. So the Ref says Drinkwater said “you’re a c*nt” and put it in his report so the PL cannot add a further ban even though the Ref couldn’t anything more because he had already sent him off. Does that make any sense at all or are these rules set up by dunces?

So, if the Lamela hand stamp is in the Ref’s report the PL will not be able to take any further action. But if it is not, they can review it? I think thems tha rules. Could be wrong tho’.

  40. Same with the snot throwing which is about the same as spitting. How many games did Cisse get for spitting? I think it was more than 3.

      (Quote)

  41. Cisse got a 7 match ban for spitting partly because he was banned earlier in the season for violent conduct. I bet Walker gets off with it.

      (Quote)

  42. I don’t think the ref saw any of the incidents to be honest. Although I am just staggered that Eric Dier stayed on the field! He made two terrible tackles and only got a yellow.

Did you see the Walker incident?

      (Quote)

  43. People might say who cares about this stuff but it would mean Alli, Dembele and Walker all miss our game.

      (Quote)

  44. Stuart, I only saw the Walker incident when it happened and didn’t see replays. Saw replays of Lamela and I think he knew what he was doing and pretended he didn’t. I think that will be hard to prove.

      (Quote)

  45. Stuart: if the Ref didn’t see the incidents and they are not in his report then the rules are that The PL/FA can look at them (I think, although who the F knows at this point). Same way they are looking at Huth and Falaini?

      (Quote)

  46. Cisse spitting was trial by television but I bet Walker gets away with it. Just watch.

      (Quote)

  47. This is from ESPN on Cisse spitting at Jonny Evans:

“The FA said in a statement: “Both players were charged in relation to an alleged breach of FA Rule E1[a] in that in or around the 38th minute of the fixture they spat at each other.

“Mr Cisse accepted the charge and his suspension consists of six matches, which is the standard penalty for this offence, with an additional one match as he has previously accepted a violent conduct charge this season.”

It should be a 6 match ban for Walker then if Stuart is right. I don’t see how intentionally flicking snot at someone is that much different to spitting but I bet he gets off with it.

      (Quote)

  48. A poke in the eye, throwing snot on someone, a stamp and two over the top tackles but the press just love Spurs and I wouldn’t be surprised if no further action is taken. Maybe a 20k fine for both teams for the fracas at the tunnel and that will be it.

      (Quote)

  49. This is actually meaningful for us as we could really do with playing a weakened Spurs team that also has nothing to play for. Look what happened with Liverpool and Swansea when Klopp played the kids.

      (Quote)

  50. Spurs still have 2nd place to play for and the goal of finishing above Arsenal. Only e points in it so need Citeh to hold Arsenal and Spurs to get at least a draw at Southampton this weekend otjerwise Spurs will still have motivation to get a result against us.

      (Quote)

  51. I still think we will go down…. We f*cked up royally the moment where we had to rely on other teams being worse than us, to keep us in the PL next season.. what a **** season…
