Newcastle Climb Out of Bottom Three

Andros Townsend and Karl Darlow inspired a hard fought, crucial victory for Newcastle as they clawed their way out of the bottom three for the first time since early February.
It was a truly determined display from Newcastle as Alan Pardew’s Palace tried to antagonise and frustrate Newcastle and their fans with cheap tactics in the first half. Pardew himself refuted claims that he set up his side to irritate the St James’s Park faithful but it was pretty obvious to all concerned that Pardew tried to turn the crowd against the home side and quash any momentum they could gain.
It did not work. The Newcastle fans did brilliantly to avoid berating their former boss and decided to instead, proudly and defiantly support their current manager and his team. It was the perfect way to deal with Pardew and his present bunch of mercenaries. Although Pardew did, in fairness, at the end of the game, congratulate Newcastle and the fans on a win, it was definitely through gritted teeth.
It was not Newcastle’s finest performance but it was one of sheer character and the three points gained could turn out to be absolutely vital. Townsend was terrific throughout. His work rate and determination was as exceptional as his free kick. Lauren Robert-like in execution, it was a magnificent strike but what was equally impressive, was when Townsend, with fifteen minutes to go, sprinted back and slid in to deny Palace a counter attack. It was the kind of endeavour that has been lacking in many Newcastle displays this season.
Karl Darlow was brilliant. He made several good stops in the first half and saved a Cabaye penalty to keep Newcastle in the lead. He seemed to grow many metaphorical inches throughout the game and was rightfully celebrated by his teammates when the final whistle blew.
With Arsenal reluctantly beating Norwich and Sunderland dropping points, it was a good afternoon for Newcastle. It could have been so much better if not for Defoe’s late, late equaliser at Stoke.
Norwich and Sunderland may have a game in hand but Newcastle have points on the board and momentum into the final games of the season. Today was a good day.

  1. And I am not making fun of a gambling addiction, I am making fun of Merson’s crazy solution.

  2. Sorry TDS, but your views on Taylor make you a glass of gin half full sort of a guy. And I know how that works after obsessing about Blackie last night.

  3. And how about if I duct tape my mouth before breaking my fingers, tie both hands behind my back so I can’t reach the control’s of my new motorized wheelchair after I have kneecapped myself? Don’t do it Merse, you could end up stealing Stephen Hawking’s wheelchair or the bookie might come to you. They are famous for being very lenient when people owe them money – maybe they could help you out with breaking your fingers or kneecaps?

  6. Today from Paul Merson’s giant Balloon head who really does not have a gambling addiction anymore:

“I think there’s more of a twist than people think in this. Newcastle are odds of 1/2 here. They’ve taken one point away from home in 2016, how can you justify being 1/2?

I know Villa haven’t been great, but you can’t be backing a team at 1/2 away from home with a record like that.”

  7. Eric Sykes:
Janmaat is fit again. I would play Anita if he is fit though as he has been training under Benitez. I don’t agree that Janmaat is suddenly **** though as a lot of people are saying. He just has to stick to his defensive duties first and give the ball to Townsend.

I was thinking why not play Janmaat at Right Wing, Anita Right Back? So that Sissoko can play middle again. Drop Gini~

  8. Don’t really get abuse of our own players. I’ve always supported our players unless they are genuinely taking the ****. I’m thinking Marcelino, **** (especially v Man Utd in FA Cup semi), N’Zogbia and a few others. Of our current lot, Goofy and Riviere seem nowhere at the moment and Cisse is the most frustrating of our first teamers for me, closely followed by Sissoko and Gini recently…

If you’ve got a drinking problem, maybe you don’t have discussions about the price of beer hey? I don’t really gamble, so I couldn’t give a **** what the bookies’ odds are.

Advice to Merson…ignore the odds mate. Otherwise there will be a day when you see them and think “ooooh, those odds are too good to ignore…”

  10. So, we are all supposed to listen to a self-admitted gambling addict who was not very good at gambling? He admits he lost 7 million gambling and also 800k of his pension. But then we are supposed to follow his predictions 🙂 🙂 🙂 *** and YCMIU. “I considered breaking my own fingers so I could not dial the phone”. Even if that was said in jest it is still so unbelievably stupid that he should not be allowed to talk in public again.

  11. There is a theme here. I do not take gambling advice from “reformed” gambling addicts and I do not take fitness advice from a man with a pot belly and man boobs.

It is sort of sad and a parody to be asking a failed gambler who says his addiction almost ruined his life about the odds on a football game? Yes?
