Portuguese newspaper ‘Record‘ have reported that Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend is on the verge of signing for Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon.
With the 24-year-old currently in Roy Hodgson’s England squad ahead of the European Championships in France, it is reported that following their 2-1 win over Turkey on Sunday, he jetted off to Portugal to put pen to paper on a deal which would see him leave Tyneside for a fee around £8 million (the amount thought to be his release clause fee).
Whilst relegation to the Championship inevitably meant some of our better players would be packing their bags in the summer, some fans clinged to the hopes that Andros wouldn’t be one of them with the idea that Rafa Benitez (should he stay) be able to further nurture his talents as we bid to get back to the top flight at the first attempt next season.
