Newcastle United midfielder Andros Townsend has been left out of Roy Hodgson’s 23 man squad for the European Championships in France. After his late upturn in form under new boss Rafa Benitez helped Newcastle to remain unbeaten in their last six games (but not to avoid relegation), the ex-Tottenham man was included in Roy’s 25 man provisional squad and after a short cameo against Australia in England’s friendly 2-1 win on Friday, the axe has unfortunately fallen on Andros as well as team mate Danny Drinkwater will also not be travelling to France next month.
The news of Townsend’s omission from the squad was reported live on the Telegraph’s live Euro 2016 squad feed with England boss Roy Hodgson given until 11pm this evening to name his final 23 players.
The 23 players that will be travelling to France in June are as follows:
Goalkeepers: Tom Heaton, Joe Hart, Fraser Forster
Defenders: Kyle Walker, John Stones, Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill, Danny Rose, Ryan Bertrand
Midfielders: James Milner, Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling, Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Jack Wilshere, Jordan Henderson, Ross Barkley
Strikers: Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, Daniel Sturridge, Jamie Vardy
