Newcastle United begin negotiations to sign 35-year-old

Dimitar Berbatov

Newcastle United are planning to bolster their attacking lineup with the signing of Dimitar Berbatov, according to reports from the Nottingham Post.

Newcastle United have already made a huge splash in the transfer market by securing the services of Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Matz Sels for a combined fee in excess of £25 million.

Despite the huge splurge, Benitez is far from done with his business in the transfer market this summer and now according to reports from the Nottingham Post, the Magpies are believed to be in talks to make a surprise swoop for former Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Berbatov was released by Greek side PAOK at the end of last season and is currently on the lookout for a new club. The recent arrival of Gayle is a big boost but Benitez will want alternatives as well and a move for Berbatov could well be on the cards as a result.

The Bulgarian striker may be entering the twilight of his career but he remains a classy player and could potentially prove to be an astute signing for the Championship side.
