Club legend hands warning to Newcastle United

Harper

Steve Harper does not believe that Newcastle United will have it easy in their bid to earn promotion into the Premier League this season.

Newcastle United suffered a very disappointing relegation into the Championship but given the fact that manager Rafael Benitez decided to continue on as manager of the club, many fans believe that the Magpies will be able to easily win promotion into the Premier League during the upcoming campaign.

In addition to Benitez staying put, Newcastle have made high profile signings such as Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Matz Sels over the past few days and they certainly can boast a very strong team in comparison to the rest of the division.

Things are looking good for Newcastle at the moment but ex-Magpies goalkeeper Steve Harper is one of the few who is not getting carried away and the 41-year-old has stated that the Magpies will not find it as easy as many are touting it to be in what is an unforgiving league such as the Championship.

Harper said, “They can definitely bounce back, but there’s all this hype that it will be easy. Believe me, it wasn’t easy last time. It was tough, even though we won the league by 11 or 12 points.

“We had a toughness about us. We were street-wise and horrible to play against. There’s all these people that think they’re going to walk the league, but they’ve just got to get up, whether they win it, come second or come up through the play-offs.

“They will have tough spells, they will lose a few games and it’s about the togetherness to get out of that league as soon as possible.”
