Georginio Wijnaldum is set to close his transfer to Liverpool this afternoon, according to The Chronicle.
The Dutchman has completed his medical and is flying out to join their US tour. A £25m fee was agreed and will be cash only, with no player exchange involved despite reports linking us to Lucas Leiva.
Reports suggest that Rafa Benitez – who makes no secret of his continuing affection for Liverpool FC – and Jurgen Klopp enjoy a cordial relationship. It’s hoped that this may pave the way for more players to move to Tyneside on loan in future.
Despite receiving a large fee for Wijnaldum, it seems unlikely that Newcastle will make any permanent moves for members of the Liverpool squad.
With Rafa still looking for defensive and attacking options, the experience we need is in short supply in their squad. Or at least with players we are likely to be interested in.
