Rafa Benitez is as diplomatic as ever when it comes to talking about players who may not leave the club this summer, reports The Chronicle.
The Spaniard has not shut the door on anyone yet, claiming that all are welcome to stay if they want to. In particular, he seems loathe to lose Daryl Janmaat and Yoan Gouffran, both of whom are attracting attention from other clubs.
Benitez showed a hint of his ruthlessness though, in leaving Janmaat out of the squad for the trip to Bristol City last weekend. The Dutchman has not objected publicly to his demotion and Rafa’s platitudes make it clear that he is hoping to hold on to the right back.
With the loan deal for Brendan Galloway falling through, Benitez may be forced to block any move for Janmaat. He told reporters earlier that he was still hoping to bring in defensive targets this summer.
With just over a week left in the transfer window, there is still plenty of time to make a deal or two but it seems likely that not everyone who wants to leave will get their wish.
