Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu has left St James Park for Switzerland, reports the Daily Mail.
Mbabu has joined BSC Young Boys on a season-long loan deal with Rafa Benitez keen for the 21 year-old to gain more experience.
Originally from Servette, Mbabu is desperate for first team action having made just 6 appearances for both clubs. A loan spell at Rangers proved disastrous with the youngster not even making the bench during his time at Ibrox.
Despite his lack of progress, he has been capped 23 times by Switzerland at junior levels, scoring twice.
The move carries more than a hint of make-or-break for Mbabu. If he can’t make the grade at Young Boys, he must surely question whether a career in professional football lies ahead for him.
With Newcastle enduring the seasons since he joined, it’s hard to judge whether he has what it takes or if it’s simply joining the right club at the wrong time. The next nine months will tell us the answer to that. The biggest hint comes with the two-year contract extension he recently signed.
If Rafa has faith, perhaps we should as well.
