Update regarding Newcastle United’s chase for Dutch international

Newcastle United are set to miss out on the signing of Bas Dost, according to reports from the Shields Gazette.

Newcastle United are hopeful of signing a new striker before the end of the summer transfer window and it had been widely claimed that the Magpies were considering a swoop for Wolfsburg star Bas Dost.

Given Newcastle’s current status as a Championship club, Dost is certainly a very ambitious target for the Magpies but it seemed like the Tyneside based outfit would be able to sign the 27-year-old due to the fact that he is surplus to requirements at Wolfsburg at the moment following the arrival of Mario Gomez this summer.

However, the Shields Gazette have now gone on to reveal that Newcastle are unlikely to sign Dost and the club hierarchy have already admitted defeat in their hopes of signing the former Heerenveen star. Dost is instead likely to join Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, who have recently made moves to sign the striker.
