Newcastle legend explains why he is delighted with this player’s arrival

Newcastle United legend Micky Quinn has stated that he is happy with the signing of Daryl Murphy.

Newcastle United splashed around £3 million to sign Daryl Murphy from Ipswich Town this summer and a few were left a bit surprised as to why the Magpies decided to sign the striker.

Benitez already boasted the likes of Dwight Gayle, Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic in his attacking ranks before the arrival of Murphy and given his advancing years, not many have been convinced as to whether the 33-year-old will be a good signing for Newcastle.

However, club legend Micky Quinn has stated that he is delighted with the signing of Murphy and explained that the striker will be a great addition to the Magpies’ squad due to his immense experience.

Quinn wrote in his column for the Chronicle, “I know some Newcastle United fans raised their eyebrows when Rafa Benitez signed Daryl Murphy last month, but I for one am absolutely delighted. The Republic of Ireland international is exactly the sort of forward I believe the Magpies need.

“You have to remember that Rafa needs to assemble a battle-hardened squad which can last the entire Championship campaign and the cup competitions. Murphy brings experience to a squad which now has bags of speed and lots of quality too.

“I think United fans are concerned because of his age, which is understandable, but he is a player who knows the second tier inside out and who will bring know-how to the Magpies squad.”

Murphy has scored an impressive 37 goals over the past two seasons in the Championship and if used properly, he could well turn out to be a decent signing for Newcastle.
