Speaking to Marca (via Sport Witness) Argentine legend Diego Maradona has slammed Rafael Benitez for failing at Real Madrid.
Rafael Benitez has most certainly managed to win over the Newcastle United faithful since his arrival to St. James’ Park during the latter part of last season and under his tutelage, the Magpies look well on course to claim promotion back into the Premier League.
As things stand, the Newcastle fans will perhaps not trade Benitez for any other manager in the world but Argentine legend Diego Maradona has surprisingly gone on to slam the Spaniard.
Speaking to Marca, Maradona stated that Benitez was a failure at Real Madrid and that he has been left baffled as to why the 56-year-old was even given the Newcastle United job in the first place.
Maradona said, “If Benitez, whom I respect very much, was bad in Madrid, let him tell me it was for a lack of players! No, he failed. But after a while, after failing there, they give him three years in Newcastle. Can someone explain it to me? Is that normal or does something go wrong?”
Maradona’s criticism of Benitez is most certainly a bit surprising but Newcastle fans will be happy that the club did decide to give the ex-Liverpool boss an opportunity to manage the club.
