Sky Sports pundit Ian Holloway has hailed Jonjo Shelvey as the best ever player he has seen in the English Championship.
Newcastle United moved into second place in the Championship table following their convincing 3-1 victory over Barnsley during the weekend and striker Dwight Gayle drew the plaudits after finding the back of the net on two occasions.
While Gayle may have gotten the goals, arguably the star of the show for Newcastle during the encounter was playmaker Jonjo Shelvey.
Shelvey pulled the strings for Newcastle at the middle of the park with consummate ease against the Bees and the England international had a hand in all three goals the Magpies scored on the night.
The 24-year-old is really making an impact for Newcastle this season and an extremely impressed Ian Holloway has gone on to state that the ex-Liverpool man is the best ever player he has seen in the English Championship.
Holloway told Sky Sports while predicting Newcastle’s clash against Barnsley on Tuesday night, “Newcastle are the Jonjo Shelvey and Dwight Gayle show. It’s ominous for the rest of the division. Teams have to stop Shelvey if are to have any chance. He goes here, there and everywhere.
“He’s probably the best player I’ve ever seen play in the Championship. He never looks to play the simple ball, he’s always looking to hurt you. Gayle is his dream ticket.
“You don’t play the pass if you haven’t got the runner. Gayle is always playing on the shoulder and Shelvey is always looking to get him away. Those two are the reason why Newcastle will continue to motor on, starting at Oakwell.”
