Speaking to French publication Foot-Sur7, Bafetimbi Gomis has backed Newcastle United winger Florian Thauvin to earn a call-up to the French national team soon.
Thauvin was one of Newcastle United’s marquee signings at the start of last season but it would be fair to state that the winger did not even come close to showing his qualities in the Premier League.
Thauvin struggled to deal with the physicality of the English game and having played only a handful of matches for Newcastle, the winger was sent back to Marseille on a loan deal till the end of the season in January.
With Newcastle suffering relegation into the Championship, Thauvin extended his temporary stay at Marseille for another year this summer and the attacker seems to have found a new lease of life at the Stade Velodrome during the current campaign.
The 23-year-old has been in fantastic form so far, scoring 3 goals in 10 appearances for Marseille and given his exploits in recent times, teammate Bafetimbi Gomis has gone on to back the winger to earn a call-up to the France national team soon.
Gomis told Foot-Sur7, “We’re lacking consistency, but we’re finding each other bit by bit. I hope to help him. He (Thauvin) assisted me, he could have scored as well.
“Since the start of the season, he’s in the right places, he helps me a lot. He’s an underestimated player, who is very close to the France national team.”
