As reported by the Chronicle, Rafa Benitez has said that Karl Darlow is training with “more confidence” than the other Newcastle ‘keepers.
Darlow looks likely to retain his spot in goal, as Newcastle host Birmingham today, after saving two penalties in his last game, away at Nottingham Forest.
During this weeks press-conference, Benitez was asked about the clubs goalkeeping situation and the Spaniard said: “All of the goalkeepers have trained well, but every week you can see he (Karl) is training with more confidence.
“That is always the best way, and for me as a manager you have 27 players.
“It doesn’t matter who plays I try to play the best in each position.
“Sometimes I will make mistakes.
Benitez was also full of praise for those pushing Darlow for his position, saying: “Matz has trained well too like Freddie and Rob.
“I trained with them, and Simon the keeper coach and I were keeping an eye on them for 10 or 15 minutes.
“I was really happy with the way they were competing.
“At the same time the relationship with them is good.”
