Wigan Athletic vs Newcastle United – Preview

After a 4-0 win last time out, Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez will no doubt be looking to build on the momentum from the game against Birmingham, as they face a tough away trip to Wigan Athletic.

Going into the game, Newcastle are rightly heavy favourites. The Tynesiders have strength in depth and quality across the park, perhaps so much so that come the season they should find themselves in an even more comfortable position than they do at the moment.

Dwight Gayle bagged a hat-trick against Birmingham and will be hoping that he gets the chance to add to his tally for the season.

However, Gayle will be unlikely to get anywhere near as many chances in this game, as the magpies are away from home, so he will have to be far more clinical than he was, for example, away to Hull.

However, with Gayle’s obvious quality and form, he should be fancied to do so.

Another talking point is whether Jamaal Lascelles will start the game. The Newcastle captain has recently been linked with Liverpool and whether or not he features in the starting line-up should show the validity of those claims.

Personally, I see no reason why Lascelles will not start the game, as it is highly unlikely that he will join Liverpool.

  1. Dubai: I am in for a thermal shock the other way. It is supposed to be minus 20 celcius on Sunday (was only about minus 10 yesterday). The Chicago Beats American Football game is supposed to be one of the coldest in history with wind chills like Alaska. Why do these idiots build outdoor stadiums? I am off to Miami in 2 weeks though.

  3. We’re in a cold spell as well. It’s much colder than usual but I love the sunny days. Lots of shoveling and scraping icy windshields.

  4. Jawdee: try wearing a t-shirt to the Big Market in minus 20 🙂 G2 has it worse than me as well.

G2: supposed to be setting records in Chicago for this time of year and Soldier Field has The Packers in this weekend so there will be many references to “The Frozen Tundra” 🙂

  5. BTW: I have grown to hate American Football. I think someone calculated that in the 3 hours broadcast there is something like only 18 minutes of action and in the whole broadcast there are about 2 hours of ads. It is just not fun unless you are in a bar and talking while the ads are on.

  6. Sorry, got it wrong. The average length of an NFL game is 3 hours 12 minutes. The average amount of time the ball is in play is 11 minutes. YES, 11 MINUTES.

That’s probably why football/soccer is catching on over here. People are just sick of all of the ads with no action.

  7. Eric that’s the thing I found with most yanks they’re all talk no action ?
As for the Wigan game I am pretty sure that will be another 3 pts.

  8. Sharpy: not much going on in this game, the commentator is spending more time talking about Delia Smith and Ed Balls than the game.

Eric – a draw would probably be best for us, but if Norwich get beat as it looks like they will, it could be curtains for their manager.

  10. Well it’s gone very wrong for Norwich. Who would have thought it after the first 10 or so games?! Their manager must be getting the chop surely.

  11. Been catching up with the transfer craic today & lots of talk Everton are putting a raid in on Man Utd.
Also suggesting that Ross Barkley has no future there after a fall out with Koeman.

Would it be nuts to think we could go and get him?!.
We have the money from the Sissoko sale.

Could we maybe loan him in Jan with a view to buying him in the summer.

I know it’s unlikely, but shy bairns

  16. Ice: we don’t play again for 9 days (boxing day) so I think Rafa can select close to our best team if he wants. I am sure he will make a couple of changes, even though they will all be well rested for the next game.

  19. Big D: I get ads for Arab and Asian brides from this site. I have no idea why as I do not even look at Asian or Arab porn. Really, I don’t.

It makes me wonder if it is random or if the new site owners have done a deal with these advertisers. Either way, it is strange.
