Wigan Athletic 0-2 Newcastle United

Last night’s game at Wigan looked a routine win for Newcastle, on paper and to an extent, that is exactly what it was. However, Rafa Benitez’s side were nowhere near their best.

The first goal came through a moment of brilliance from Mo Diame, who is really starting to show Newcastle fans what he can do. Diame went on a great run after receiving the ball because of an Isaac Hayden interception. He then played a one-two with Hayden before dancing through the Wigan defence and slotting the ball under the veteran goalkeeper, Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Wigan then had their moments. The pressed very high and Newcastle’s sloppiness almost awarded them some chances, but the Latics’ finishing was poor.

Christian Atsu then sealed the game late on, with a great strike on his left foot. As the ball sailed into the Wigan net, there was a sense of relief that the three points were coming back to Tyneside.

This may not have been Newcastle’s greatest display but they got the job done and that is all that anyone could ask.
