Burton Albion vs Newcastle United – Pre Match and Predicted Team

Newcastle travel to Burton today in what, on paper, looks like a game that they should win.

However, there has been much talk, during the week, regarding the tactical threat that Burton Albion could pose to Rafa Benitez’s side.

Burton play with wing-backs, which, in theory, should allow them to make the pitch big and retain possession of the ball.

However, with Burton struggling in the league and Newcastle flying at the top, it could work in reverse for the home side.

While playing with wingbacks does allow a side to play wide and retain the ball, it also means, by virtue of making the pitch big, that they are less compact and that there could be more space to exploit.

Mo Diame has been arguably Newcastle’s best player in recent weeks and his influence could be needed again, to make use of the extra space if he is selected.

As always with Rafa, who named an unchanged side for the first time this season against Wigan during the week, there is no guarantees that anyone will start.

So here is what we feel that the team should be:

GK- Karl Darlow

RB- Vurnon Anita

CB- Jamaal Lascelles (c)

CB- Ciaran Clark

LB- Paul Dummett

CM- Jonjo Shelvey

CM- Isaac Hayden

RW- Christian Atsu

Ten- Mo Diame

LW- Yoan Gouffran

ST- Dwight Gayle

However, as always, this just opinion. What do you guys make of this side? Would yours be different?

  1. Probably only half a dozen players in our top 20 who would do anything to be a Newcastle player ……..Mitro is one of them ……we sure as hell aren’t going to lose because he starts ….deserves a start ……AND ….yes I know Gayle is best striker in the Championship

  6. Burton away could encourage a bit of squad rotation and use some of the players who haven’t had much game time yet – Lazaar, Mbemba, Hanley, Murphy – maybe even Sels.
    But I wouldn’t be keen on too many changes, coz look at what happen at Bburn. We have to come away with the 3 points first.
    Huddersfield winning last night showed there is no let up at the moment. Make a few changes maybe but 2 or 3 tops for me, then use subs.

    Stu – you’d expect Burton to defend deep and keep the goal difference down. But we would be a big scalp for them & they will have looked at the Bburn game I bet for ideas of how to shut us out. Treat it as a bit of a cup game.
    Yeah, I don’t think today will be straightforward at all.

    Moyes is a fool mate, it’s been common knowledge they are in debt for seasons now, why would he not get that in writing in his contract about funds for players? What is it they say about fools rushing in. Poor sods on a hiding to nothing there.

They were fawning all over him as he spouted the line that he was hard done by to be sacked by England and if only he was given the reins of a big club like Man U he would rule the world.     It is a good squad too Eric, that’s why his results are so damning. He bought Andros on very late on in the hope he’d save his skin, just like he used to do with Benny with us.
