Is the grass always greener ?

Happy new year to all our bloggers old and new.

As we go into the New Year, could we see a new owner, manager and players on the horizon ? There has been talk on and off over the last couple of weeks on this blog about the prospect of a new owner for Newcastle United. The general consensus being it will most likely be a Chinese buyer if it happens.

I have long thought that should we go back up to the Premier League that Mike Ashley would cash in before the next disaster struck us. In recent times he has taken a back seat, rarely if ever attending our games. I don’t believe he has attended a single game this season though I stand to be corrected on that. He has stated that he is leaving all club affairs to Lee Charnley to administer, though I have little doubt that he is still pulling some of the strings in the background. If we take the Rafa as new manager situation, many believe this was a deal struck between Ashley and Rafa with Lee left to sort out the relevant paperwork. Let’s face it, Lee’s form on getting the right man in isn’t that hot is it?

So, assuming we return to the promised land, do we see Ashley cashing in ? There seems to be an increasing interest in owning English clubs from our Chinese friends. Would there really be an interested party in China that fancied owning a club outside of London? And more importantly would it be a good idea for all concerned? Now most of our regular bloggers will know that I like Ashley about as much as a bout of hemorrhoids, but – and here’s the rub, should we really think of swapping him for a Chinese investor?

Which side is NUFC on right now?

Whatever my misgivings about Ashley are, we do pretty much know where we are with him. We understand how ruthless he can be and downright nasty at times but although he changed us to ‘Sports direct at SJP‘ for a while he has never attempted to change the colour of the strip. Would the Chinese consider doing something like that considering their liking for Red for instance ? I don’t think they have anything in particular against the black and white stripes but I do know they see red as very lucky. Someone would have to point out how lucky it is for Sunderland.

Another factor would be the manager. Would they want to keep Rafa? You would think so but then you never know. How much time would a manager be given if, say, an awful lot of money was invested in players? Would we see a revolving door of managers and a return to instability???

We may be in the championship in part due to this owners lack of ambition and tenancy to try and do things cheaply – but in fairness he has hired Benitez and let go of the reigns of late. I’m thankful for that much and although I would never of thought i’d say it, is it a case of better the devil you know?
