Former Newcastle Midfielder Takes His First Steps Into Management

As reported by BBC Sport, former Newcastle United midfielder, Alan Smith, has been named as caretaker manager of Notts County.

Smith has been appointed until a full-time boss can be found. Notts County sacked their last manager, John Sheridan on Monday, following nine straight defeats, which has left them extremely close to the relegation zone.

Smith, who will be fondly remembered by many Newcastle supporters for a great season in the heart of the Newcastle midfield, last time that the club was promoted to the Premier League, is now 36 years old and has been a player-coach at Notts County since he joined the club back in May 2014.

“The important thing is for everyone – players, staff and fans – to stick together,”  said Smith.

“There’s no getting away from it, it’s been a very, very disappointing season so far. But there are lots of points still to play for and we are determined and confident of putting things right.”
