Birmingham City Away Preview – Reasons For Optimism?

This weekend would usually be one filled with a lot of pessimism. Newcastle go into the game having been beaten 1-0 by Blackburn in their last game  and the FA Cup is not a competition that we can say that we have excelled in of late, in fact we have been something of a disaster in the competition.

However, I can’t help but feel optimistic. Despite struggling lately, we still appear to be heading for promotion back to the Premier League, with a world class manager at the helm. In this manager, we also appear to have a man who values cup competitions.

Throughout his career, Rafa Benitez has produced many great and some legendary, cup moments and victories. So I find myself hoping that he will be capable of overseeing a victory away to Birmingham, albeit a very difficult game.

With Birmingham not doing as well without Gary Rowett, it could be argued that it is a good time to play them. Although the same could be said about us.

  3. I’ve long since lost interest in the FA cup. We could do quite well but then meet one of the big boys in the last four.
Promotion is all that matters this season.

It’s funny all this speculation about Mitro. Rafa actually said last weekend he would start in Birmingham and he will.

  7. I hope the story about Mbemba is not true. In my opinion he is the best prospect for CB. Would he make the bench if he was not following instructions?

  8. can’t see much positive coming out of the fa cup, a cup run will only tax a small and underperforming squad. Out of the cup, concentrate on promotion. 2-0 Brum.

  9. Groucho, Mbemba obviously understood Benitez’s instructions to find his way to the bench ?.
Personally I feel whenever Lascalles comes under pressure he caves in. Mbemba is good ln the floor, but weak in the air. Both are average defenders, but both would get found out in the Premier League.

  12. It sounds ridiculous but I don’t want a serious FA cup run this season. Too much at stake getting promoted. Not for Fatty but for the club and its supporters. A few wins in a row in the league and we’ll be fine again.

  13. Good move with the puppy ice mate. That’s what I wanted to do for Mitro to calm him down. A puppy to chew on his slippers and chase around the flat. 😀

Hull knock back bid of 3 mil from W/Hamfor snodgrass,Villa made inquiry for Delph

Gotta love W/ham though ice. £6m for Defoe – one of the PLs most prolific CFs and who is already on 11 PL goals this season (in a seriously **** side). £3m for Snodgrass who himself has 9 PL goals this season – 20 PL goals for £9m!!! – the Cockney porn merchants don’t want much like do they ?

  20. I think I might challenge Kimtoon for who hates West Spam the most. I hate their owners, and I especially hate how the London media suck up to them. They say nothing about the gift of a stadium to the pornsters who will sell when it suits them and make hundreds of millions. They go on about the academy like they have produced any players in the last 15 years. Carrick was the last one, and don’t talk to me about Joe Cole. The way the media treats them is just one big knob sucking contest, which is appropriate given the owners’ regular line of work.

And they won the world cup for England don’t you know !!! That’s the way they talk about it anyway. As if Gordon Banks, Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles weren’t even on the pitch.

And another thing. The press have canonised Trev Brooking and MPs want to change the law to posthumously knight Bobby Moore. I don’t disagree with that but they better put Bob Paisley on that ticket otherwise I will think it is yet more media and political bias to West Ham. Why isn’t anybody questioning a gift of a 723 million pound taxpayer funded stadium?

I fcking hate West Ham and all of their media suck ups.

  21. And if you were going to posthumously knight any sports figure then Paisley and Brian Clough are just as deserving as Moore. But the London Press and Southern MPs won’t make a case for that, because they have no connection to Wet Spam.

  22. Sham: I think the whole honours system is a farce anyway, but if you are going to give them out then I don’t see that there is a difference if the person is alive or dead. They gave the golfer Henry Cotton a knighthood after he died. They also said they couldn’t revoke Jimmy Savile’s honours, and that shyster who ran the Bank of Scotland into the ground.

Here is something from a petition when Tony Blair was PM requesting a knighthood for Clough:

“When Cloughie’s name was missing from the last Queen’s Birthday Honours List, the feelings of many fans were summed-up in this e-mail from John Pinkney:

“I awoke to find the legend has been missed off the list again. Arise Sir Trevor Brooking. Yes, nice bloke but not in the same class as the master manager. Brian Clough must get a knighthood.”

The officials have previously saluted a drag queen (Danny La Rue) but once again failed to bestow a knighthood on the football king, Brian Clough.”

  23. Eric Sykes, Kimtoon has lost that one mate, you are without doubt the biggest West Ham hater on this blog. Probably in the whole of north America, including Canada !

Doesn’t make you a bad person though !
