Newcastle vs Aston Villa – A Trip Down Memory Lane To Remember A Special Goal

Newcastle United host Aston Villa tonight and Rafa Benitez and his side will no doubt be more than confident of a win.

Going into tonight’s game, Newcastle are on a great run of form against Villa, with the home side not being beaten by the visitors since 10th April 2011.

Since then, there have been six draws between the two sides, with five wins going to Newcastle.

However, for this special moment we have to journey back further.

In fact, we have to journey back to Saturday November 3rd 2001, and just like what is likely to be happening tonight, there was a former Manchester United ‘keeper in goal for Villa.

However, it was not Sam Johnstone, it was the great Peter Schmeichel.

Schmeichel has often been referred to as the greatest ‘keeper in Premier League history, so to score against him at all took some doing (just ask Philippe Albert), but as special as Schmeichel was, the scorer of this goal was even more special.

Picture the scene, Robert Lee has the ball, he looks up and plays a diagonal ball deep into the Aston Villa box. The ball is met perfectly by the run of none other than Alan Shearer, who is on hand with a perfect right footed volley, which flew past Schmeichel, who could not even move.

If any of you haven’t seen the goal, please watch it here on YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCwEmaIFnAQ
