Newcastle United 2-0 Aston Villa – How The Pantomime Villain Became The Toast Of Tyneside

Before the game, there seemed to be a feeling that last night’s game against Aston Villa was a must win, and that the game would be difficult.

If truth be told, both of those things were true. Villa were well organised, pressed high and had a great work ethic, everything that you would expect from a struggling team hoping to get a result against one of the top sides in their division.

However, despite this, the quality of the Newcastle players shone through and they were able to win by two goals to nil, playing some wonderful football in the second half of the game.

Another thing that everyone was sure of, going into the game,  was that Henri Lansbury would definitely not receive a warm welcome, and shockingly, he didn’t.

The former Nottingham Forest man was booed and jeered for almost the entire game, following a performance that would have been more suited to a pantomime than a football match, the last the that he played against Newcastle.

Actually, the only time that Lansbury was not booed was for a brief period following Newcastle’s second goal. The reason? He was the one who scored it. Lansbury’s own goal doubled Newcastle’s lead, following a first half strike from Yoan Gouffran, which was met by a brief chorus of “there’s only one Henri Lansbury.”

However, that was soon drowned out by a far less complementary song about the Villa midfielder.

In summary, Newcastle fans could not have wished for a better night. A comfortable win against a massive club, and the player who wanted so badly to be the villain of the piece sealing the win for them.

  1. Sharpy17: Ice – yeah I read that too. More NUFC players showed him concern than his own teammates. How or why he ended up at Villa is beyond me to be honest. If WHU didn’t come in, I’d have stayed at Brentford if I were him.

    Me too mate

  2. Strange days when players don’t show concern for each other and turn on their manager. The Leicester story has to be one of the strangest in all of sport. Can’t believe some of those players would betray Ranieri. I pulled for them to win the league last year but now they are a disaster. It should be a lesson learned for other clubs. They took a step too far with their performances last year. Now it’s not only a battle to stay up but a battle to restore their self respect.

G2 – Schmichael is the first and only player to speak up so far – but Wes Morgan is the captain isn’t he? – might be Schmichael like. Still it’s bad craic

  7. Leeds and Sheffield playing each other today and Brighton vs Reading. Some of the chasing pack will drop points, good opportunity for us today. What’s the betting that Brighton do their usual and finish in 3rd place behind Huddersfield but 10 points above 4th. They do it every year. 🙂 Hope we beat them on Tuesday myself. 😮

  9. Oh dear, well they are quite capable of scoring, I said this the other day. Their problem is defending, up to Toon to get at them now .

City have a terribly fragile defence, last weekend they went 3.0 up only to give up 3 goals after! and got beat 2.0 by Fulham on Tuesday. They haven’t won in 11 games, if we can’t beat City we got no chance v Brighton.
And there goes the 2nd goal, up hill now

  13. Sounds like we had a good shout for a pen there, not given. It’s going to be one of those games… no changes at half time… ?

We always do this against **** bottom teams. ??

  14. Typical toon. Said last week we can lose these kind of games. Looked poor v villa and now playing ****. Huddersfield will be on our toes if results stay as is.
Great preparation for the next few games

  15. Bristol has been pressing high. It gives lots of pressure on our midfield. They can’t function. All of our action is on the wing.

  16. On the other hand, Bristol simply can’t press for the whole 90 minutes. The 2nd half is our half. We must take the chance.

  18. We really needed to win that one. I’ll take the draw in the circumstances but we were **** in first half. The next match is crucial now. If Huddersfield draw then no major problem.

  19. Our midfield, without Hayden, is too weak to either defend or go forward when the opposite press high. Even with Hayden it is still an issue. We lost home and away to Blackburn because they were doing that.

  20. credit for battling back from 2-0 down, but I hope some lessons have been learned.
Serious attitude problem to start the match. Like ‘all we need to do is turn up and get the win’ WRONG
I thought Rafa was meant to be on top of this with his fantastic management hmmmmm 😕
we should have won it at the end to be honest, but once again Mitro and a few others found wanting. ffs please give Murphey a chance
Just need Reading to get a win now and all will be well.
    Roll on Tuesday

  21. got some decent players too Kim
    Knockheart, Baldock, to start with.
I fear for our next 3 matches, we really are playing consistently poorly lately.
rely too much on shelvey to create something.
    Mitro too sluggish
Colback is just a waste of space
    Lascelles still doesn’t impress me
    Perez ***!
    Diame not much better
    Dummett prone to errors
Darlow lost his head badly today
Yedlin no end product to his runs except out of position
    Clarke solid
Atsu needs to get more involved

Knockeart is a class act mate, he will kill us on Tuesday I fear. It’s my birthday Tuesday as well and I fear it’s not gonna be a happy one.
