The Daily Mail reports today that Newcastle United are set to renew their interest in Fulham midfielder, Tom Cairney, this summer – the man who ran the show in Fulham’s 3-1 win at St.James’ Park earlier this month.
It was reported by The Chronicle that Newcastle made an enquiry for the 26 year-old in the January window, but The Magpies soon backed away from a deal when Fulham slapped a £20m price tag on his head.
It is being reported in the Daily Mail today, however, that the Scottish midfielder could be available for £12m this summer – £8m less than Newcastle were quoted in a January; a month notorious for hiked prices and difficult business.
Cairney has an impressive 9 goals and 10 assists this season for 7th place Fulham, with his promising displays catching the eye of Rafa Benitez.
I was at Newcastle’s home defeat to Fulham and Cairney was magnificent. He ran the show for the visitors, taking the pressure off his team with several assured touches. He showed a real calmness in possession and impressive technique, scoring a stunning long range strike to give Fulham a deserved lead at St.James’ Park.
Unlike a few transfer rumblings over recent days, this one seems to have legs. So, should Newcastle secure promotion, I can see this one happening, barring a late surge from Fulham who may yet be in with a chance of promotion, should they sneak into the final play off spot.
