Newcastle linked with ambitious move for Premier League playmaker

It has been suggested by The Sun today that Newcastle United will make a summer move for Premier League playmaker, Gylfi Sigurdsson – should Rafa’s NUFC gain promotion back to the top flight.

The reports suggests Newcastle have entered the race for Sigurdsson, facing competition from Everton, West Ham and Southampton for the Swansea star who has 9 goals and 11 assists this term.

A source told The Sun:

“Rafa knows he can’t just go and buy the biggest names in their first season back, but Gylfi would be a good-value addition to his squad.”

The Icelander would be the perfect signing for Newcastle, should we gain promotion, offering the sort of quality in the number 10 role that we have lacked this season.

Sigurdsson has an impressive 27 goals and 25 assists across the last 3 Premier League seasons,  being a prime example of a player proven in the top flight.

It must be said, however, that this is another transfer link that should be taken with a pinch of salt for now, with The Chronicle also suggesting the Swansea man is not currently on The Magpies radar.

He turns 28 this year and would no doubt demand more than the £15m fee suggested by The Sun. Also, is this the sort of deal Mike Ashley sanctions? Not really – but that may need to change this summer if Benitez is to remain at the helm.

With the likes of Everton also interested, Newcastle would also face a tough task convincing the player to join, even if the financial side of the deal was sanctioned.

It can’t be forgotten that Newcastle still have a big job to do before we can start picturing summer transfer targets as a Premier League club.

Should we gain promotion, this is the sort of player i’d love to see Benitez target, but for now, let’s focus on promotion.

  1. Who would he replace? He’s got an excellent free kick delivery. He does well, but I am not 100% sold on him. He does make some very nice passes though. I don’t know that he’s worth the 15M though.

On another note, I leave Wednesday for London and then Friday for Newcastle to see the Wigan game. Where do I go pre-game? Where do you all go? It would be nice to meet at least one or two of you for pints. No pressure though. Where is the ideal pre-game hangout? I was going to try the Strawberry, if I can, but wondering where else, just in case.

    Cheers.
