Things go from bad to worse for Sunderland: could their loss be NUFC’s gain?

As if the Mackems didn’t have it bad enough already, it was reported yesterday by the Daily Mail that Sunderland will lose star man, Jermaine Defoe, on a free should they be relegated.

Sunderland are rock bottom of the Premier League and 7 points from safety, with David Moyes facing a mammoth task to save his side from relegation to the second tier.

The one shining light in an otherwise dismal season has been Jermaine Defoe, yet again, with the striker netting 14 times – scoring over half of his sides goals in the league this season!

News has broke, however, that Defoe can leave the club on a free should they fail to beat the drop, seeing Sunderland’s dismal situation go from bad to worse.

This will no doubt spark interest across several Premier League clubs. You know what i’m thinking don’t you?

If promoted, Defoe would be a smashing signing for The Magpies on a short term deal.

Despite being 34 years-old, he continues to has prove that, for some, age is just a number, netting 29 times in his past two Premier League seasons.

Jermaine would most likely opt against signing for Sunderland’s bitter rivals and it may also represent a deal Mike Ashley would struggle to justify, but with NUFC potentially in the market for a proven Premier League goalscorer this summer, he’s one we’d be foolish to ignore.

With West Ham likely to be interested, returning to his local London club could appeal, however, the striker is said to be enjoying living in the North-East and wants Premier League football to boost his International hopes with England – which NUFC could offer if promoted.

You just never know..
