Alan Shearer took to Twitter on Friday night to have his say on the performance of Newcastle United’s Aleksandar Mitrovic in the 1-1 draw against Leeds United at St. James’ Park.
The ex-NUFC number 9 voiced his disappointment towards the Serbian striker, claiming his display was ‘not good enough’.
I believe this to be a very bizarre comment to make. Mitrovic may have endured a disappointing season in the main, but Friday night’s performance was undoubtedly one of his best this season. He won his battles, held the ball well and effectively brought others into play, doing especially well given he was the sole striker up against two imposing Leeds centre halves.
He was, for me, one of our stand out performers that night, making Shearer’s comments all the more mystifying and harsh.
Several Newcastle fans reacted to Alan’s tweet, responding to the former United legend to defend Mitrovic’s display:
@alanshearer are you having a laugh ? He was brilliant everything we've been lacking the last few weeks/months

Love Shearer, but i'm shocked by his view on Mitrovic. I thought he was class tonight. #NUFC

@alanshearer Never thought I'd disagree with you but I have to here! Attitude and workrate was spot on, other things will come with gametime!

@alanshearer on Mitrovic tonight..
Sort it out Alan, he was brilliant. He's justified criticism in the past but not tonight! #NUFC ⚫⚪⚫ https://t.co/ursnb6I8vK

As the above tweet alludes to, Mitrovic has justified criticism at times this season, looking sluggish, off the pace and very ordinary on occasion, but Friday night’s performance and visible improvement deserved praise not criticism.
It’s a game of opinions, but this one from Alan has left myself and several others a little bemused.
Olly I agree 100%.. the guy did everything you mentioned and got an assist after not starting a game for us in 2 months. But these are the things Mitro cops time and again. Not fair
