Steve Stone makes shock suggestion that Rafa could cash in on NUFC star this summer

During BBC 5Live commentary of Friday’s draw with Leeds United, Steve Stone made a very bold claim, suggesting that Rafa Benitez could sell top scorer, Dwight Gayle, this summer in a bid to generate funds and re-invest.

The former Newcastle United first team coach said the following on Friday night:

“He might even get rid of the likes of Dwight Gayle,”

“Somebody might come and offer £15million, £20m – a team from the Championship, to try and get back up.”

“He might actually be sold to try and better Newcastle. That’s what might happen here.”

“They are going to have to sell to try and get some better players into the team.”

Personally, I think this is nonsense from Stone. I can see a possibility of Murphy or Mitrovic being moved on, but I certainly don’t expect to see Gayle drop back down to the Championship should we go up.

Gayle has 22 league goals for United this term and will be desperate to make a name for himself in the Premier League next season, should we secure promotion. He was rarely more than an impact sub during his time with Crystal Palace, however the 27 year-old’s impressive season with the Magpies will give fans hope that he can contribute in the top flight.

We will undoubtedly need reinforcements in the striking department, as Gayle would do well to reach half of this seasons tally in the Premier League, but the idea of selling Gayle is a non starter for me and very strange suggestion from Stone.
