After suffering a disastrous 3-1 defeat to Ipswich yesterday, Newcastle’s day looked set to be a dismal one. Whilst it was a damaging blow for Benitez and his team, event’s that evening helped lift the mood on Tyneside, as promotion rivals, Huddersfield, blew a huge chance to gain ground on the Magpies.
In a day of mixed emotions, we took to Twitter to gain some of the immediate reactions from Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat to Ipswich in the 3pm kick off, followed by the mass Magpie relief that met Derby’s late equaliser against Huddersfield in yesterday’s late kick off.
Firstly, here’s some fan reactions to Newcastle’s shock defeat to Ipswich in the 3pm kick off:
Everyone who says Benitez can't be criticised is absolutely bollocks, that team selection today was awful. Why change from Friday???? #NUFC

#NUFC clearly have some very good players, but their tactic of doing a 'poor Ipswich' & lumping it to Murphy all game was bizarre #itfc

We are shot. Look so average. No confidence. Lascelles has to be dropped he's been shocking. We gave 2 awful goals away again #nufc

@NUFC genuinely scared that we won't get promoted. Can't take another year on the championship! #nufc #bottlers

@NUFC360 Gonna be hard to accept if we bottle it
I just can't believe whats happening to us #NUFC

Two hours on from the above tweets, Huddersfield looked all set to close the gap on Newcastle, as they lead 1-0 away to Derby in the 5pm game on Sky Sports.
In the 89th minute, however, Jacob Butterfield’s deflected strike dealt the Terriers a costly blow, handing Newcastle a huge boost in the process.
It’s fair to say Jacob Butterfield will never have to buy a pint in Newcastle, as his goal gave utter relief to the Geordie faithful, seeing Huddersfield lose their precious lead at the death, dropping 2 precious points:

Bloody Love Derby county!!! It's give us a bit of breathing room. Win against Preston on Monday and we're up!! #NUFC

Before Derby equalised #Nufc were 1/10 to be promoted, they're now 1/100 that's how big that goal was… you're welcome ?

Might get a signed Jacob Butterfield poster and hang it on my wall #NUFC

'Newcastle United, we're coming for you..' …
Are you really though Huddersfield?
BUTTERFIELD! ?? #dcfc #nufc pic.twitter.com/QbCjgKo8Eb— EmJay ✌️ (@EmmaKinsey7) April 17, 2017
As for #NUFC, that Derby equaliser v Huddersfield was huge. Because we aren't capable of doing this ourselves, we're horrific right now.

With minutes of the Huddersfield game to go, it looked set to be a disastrous day for Newcastle, but Jacob Butterfield’s late strike could have moved the Mags one step closer to promotion back to the top flight!
We were so poor, going from one of our best performance to worst, however 5 changes did not work. I think I would have brought Murphy in, but alongside Mitro.( As Diame is the new Sissoko, waste of space) Mbemba should have started and Yedlin clearly not unto speed, after one of Anita’s best displays??. Lascelles needs to stop dilly dallying in this league he cost us against LEEDs and his distribution is woeful. Atsu apart from cross for goal no interest. And our big players Shelvey and Ritchie fit in with the rest today.
POSITIVES TODAY HUDDERS DREW!!
COME ON LADS SHOW SOME BALLS 3 LEEDS PERFORMANCES WITH LUCK WILL BE THREE WINS AND PROMOTION.
Congratulations to Chris Hughton you showed us what bottle and stability is all about.
