When asked about recent speculation linking him with a move to Newcastle United, Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross refused to rule out a move to Tyneside this summer.
The centre-back has 12 months left on his current contract with the Potters and has recently been linked with a move away from the club, with Rafa Benitez said to be interested in the player.
In an Interview with the Stoke Senitel, Shawcross said the following when asked to clear up speculation linking him with Newcastle:
“I’m not going to Newcastle – at the moment.”
“I’ve got a year left on my contract and any time a player comes to the later stages of his contract there’s going to be talk.
“All I can do is concentrate on Stoke and hopefully play well.
Shawcross could well stay at Stoke should he be offered a new deal, however his response did little to clear up speculation linking him with a move.
Whilst his surprise response should be taken with a pinch of salt, Shawcross would represent a solid buy for United – should anything come of it.
A player offering such Premier League experience and leadership qualities would not got amiss next season, with a feeling amongst fans that Benitez must address the centre-back position this summer as doubts have emerged surrounding Jamaal Lascelles’ ability to cope in the top flight.
I’m not holding my breath with this one but, given Shawcross’ rather alternative response, it’s perhaps one to watch this summer.
