Rafa Benitez is eyeing a summer bid for Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton according to a reported ‘exclusive’ in the Sun today.
The report claims Newcastle will go head to head with Crystal Palace this summer for the signing of Heaton, with the 31 year-old set to demand a £15m fee after an outstanding season in the top flight with newly promoted Burnley.
As good as Heaton has been, I can’t see this happening one bit.
Newcastle need to strengthen considerably this summer, but a goalkeeper is arguably the least of our worries, with the capable Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot and Tim Krul all on our books. Not to mention Benitez signed Belgian international Matz Sels for £5m last summer.
Secondly, I don’t see Ashley justifying a £15m spend on a 31 year-old and I struggle to either given our vast options in goal.
Don’t get me wrong, Heaton has been one of the top Premier League keepers this season so would not be a ‘bad’ signing, i’d just far rather see that sort of money invested elsewhere in the side.
