Rafa Benitez is believed to be considering a move for Manchester City keeper Willy Caballero this summer according to The Times.
Newcastle are believed to be in the running for a new goalkeeper this summer, with recent reports claiming Benitez had been keen to bring former stopper Pepe Reina to the club.
Caballero, who turns 36 in September, made 26 appearances for Manchester City last season, however the club recently announced that the Argentine will be released this summer, allowing him to be signed on a free agent over the coming months.
The often reliable North-East sports writer George Caulkin reports the story in The Times today, claiming that Caballero could be targeted by Benitez as a cheaper alternative to Pepe Reina.
This comes after Reina’s agent suggested yesterday that the Napoli goalkeeper would see out the final year of his contract in Italy, pouring cold water on claims that he had agreed a move to Tyneside.
