Newcastle United look set to miss out on Ruben Semedo after the agent of the Sporting Lisbon centre-back revealed today that he is set for a move to Spain.
Portuguese reports have credited Newcastle with a serious interest in Semedo over recent weeks, and at one point he looked all set for a move to Tyneside, but today’s news suggests we have missed out on our man.
Semedo’s agent, Catio Balde claims that the 23-year-old is close to a move to Spain in his latest interview today:
“We are about to confirm the transfer of Ruben Semedo,”.
“It’s probably Spain. I confirm Spain. We are looking forward to closing the deal today.”
“We are working, yesterday was intense.”
“We are absolutely certain that there will probably be a conclusion today. Ruben was faced with several possibilities.”
“It was in Spain that we found the best solution. Until this moment I can not confirm conclusively. He’s in a good way.”
It is believed that the Spanish club in question is Villareal, who look set to beat Newcastle and Southampton to Semedo’s signature.
Recent reports claimed that the defender had his sights set on a move to the Premier League, however, with Villareal’s 5th place finish in La Liga earning them Europa League football next season, that may have been a contributing factor.
It’s a real shame, with Semedo said to be one of Europe’s most promising defenders, but Rafa is said to have several other irons in the fire.
