Reports last night claim that Newcastle have made a rival offer for Arsenal target Henry Onyekuru – the 19-year-old wonder kid who was the top scorer in Belgium last season.
It was recently announced that the Gunners had activated the £6.8m release clause for the Nigerian forward, however the player himself has recently stated that he is looking for a club that can offer him regular first team football.
Whilst Arsenal may seem a more attractive proposition than Newcastle, his demand for game time could just give us the edge.
According to the Express, a source close to the player has revealed the Newcastle have offered Onyekuru a £36,000-a-week contract, with the Nigerian set to fly to England next week to speak with several of the interested parties:
“Newcastle United have joined in the race to sign Henry [Onyekuru],” the source told website ScoreNigeria.
“They contacted his agency Mercato on Wednesday and offered to pay him £36,000-a-week.”
“The talk is on-going between them and the agent.”
The 19-year-old can play out wide or up top and scored an impressive 22 goals in the Belgian league last season, despite his current side, K.A.S. Eupen, finishing 13th out of a possible 16 teams in the Belgium top flight.
