The Northern Echo report today that Rafa Benitez is eyeing a reunion with Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, and has made an enquiry to bring him to St. James’ Park this summer.
Benitez is believed to be keen to sign ‘at least’ a couple of midfielders this summer, and has identified the Brazilian midfielder as an option in the deep-lying midfield role next to Jonjo Shelvey.
The report also states that Rafa is looking to add an experienced alternative to Isaac Hayden to protect the United back four next season, and Lucas would appear to fit the bill.
Lucas Leiva under Rafa Benitez will be a very decent signing.
Loaning Ings and Gomez there would be a massive step for both players as well— LFC Player Ratings (@PlayerLfc) June 15, 2017
The 30-year-old was brought to Anfield by Benitez himself in a £5m deal from Gremio in 2007, and went on to play 121 times under the Spaniard.
Lucas has been told he does not feature in Jurgen Klopp’s long-term plans, and with just one year left on his current deal the Echo believe he will be available for a fee in the region of £4m this summer.
Newcastle currently lack Premier League experience and the signing of Rafa’s tried and trusted Lucas could prove to be a shrewd summer signing on a short-term contract.
