Newcastle United confirmed the sale of Kevin Mbabu to BSC Young Boys yesterday, however the former United defender has made some revealing comments today in his farewell message to the club on social media, suggesting he would have ‘loved’ to remain on Tyneside.
The Swiss defender never really got his chance at Newcastle following several injuries and changes to management, and following his permanent move to Young Boys yesterday, the 22-year-old posted a heartfelt message to Newcastle United fans – with many of the Toon Army disappointed to see him leave.
The one line that stood out to me was this one, where Mbabu suggests that he would have ‘loved’ to stay at NUFC:
“I would have loved to give you more, but injuries and new opinions have decided differently.”
It sounds to me like his poor injury record and the ‘new opinion’ of the eagle-eyed and ruthless Rafa Benitez has seen him axed, even if he hoped to make a career for himself at St. James’.
