Some positive moves on the transfer front today, with the Shields Gazette reveal that Mike Ashley is pushing Lee Charnley to get deals done at Newcastle United and has made it known that he stands firm on his pledge to back Rafa Benitez this summer.
Rafa Benitez is known to be frustrated by our lack of transfer activity this summer, with the Spaniard said to have been keen to get most of his summer business done before the players returned for pre-season training next Monday.
Whilst it has been deemed unrealistic to have recruited 5 or 6 players by the first week of July, Newcastle are yet to make a single signing since the straightforward deal of making Christian Atsu’s loan deal a permanent one in May.
This news today is reassuring to hear for us all, however, as the Gazette state Ashley is ‘keen for the club to do some early business’, and is in regular contact with Charnley to deliver the signings Benitez is anxiously waiting to make.
Hopefully Ashley’s intervention kicks Charnley into gear and this sees us confirm the long-winded pursuit of Florian Lejeune, which could then create a snowball effect for the arrival other targets said to be the pipeline.
Here’s hoping.
Olly, a slight correction. The Gazette hasn’t revealed anything. It has REPORTED Ashley has made it known he stands firm on his pledge. There is no evidence Ashley has actually said this is there?
