Lejeune deal close to completion while a move for Pepe Reina hangs in the balance

Some promising and not so promising transfer news this afternoon, as a deal for Florian Lejeune looks set to be completed by the start of pre-season training on Monday, whilst Newcastle’s pursuit of Pepe Reina has once again been cast into doubt.

The Chronicle claim Newcastle have agreed a four-year-deal with Eibar for Lejeune, with Lee Ryder stating this afternoon that he expects the centre-back to be a Newcastle by Monday after Eibar look resigned to losing one of their top players.

With regards to Reina, the outlook is not so positive however, with suggestions today that Benitez’s no.1 goalkeeping target could see out his contract in Naples.

When Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis was asked whether he would be speaking to Reina about his future, he said:

“Why shouldn’t I? It’s not complicated.”

“Reina has another year left on his contract and there is a willingness to respect that agreement as we are aware of his value.

“It is clear that we are going to meet each other very soon but it is also clear that we want to buy another goalkeeper to have more options.”

Whilst many fans I speak to feel another goalkeeper would be unnecessary, I believe Reina would be a fantastic addition.

It may not be an area we are desperate for reinforcements in, but signing a goalkeeper of Reina’s experience, quality and character would offer so much to the club both on and off the pitch.

Here’s hoping there’s a twist in the tale yet that could see the former Liverpool stopper reunited with Rafa this summer.
