Sunderland appoint manager beaten 12-2 by NUFC across three games last season

Last night, bitter rivals Sunderland announced Simon Grayson as their new manager, naming the ex-Preston boss as the man who will look to bring them back to the Premier League after suffering relegation last season.

It’s fair to say that Grayson’ appointment has been met with muted optimism by the Mackems, with it not being lost on me that Grayson’s Preston suffered 6-0, 2-1 and 4-1 defeats to Newcastle last season. I’m not banking on a Tyne and Wear derby anytime soon, which is a shame given Rafa’s 12-2 aggregate victory over Grayson in their last three meetings!

Grayson will be brought in to bring stability on Wearside, but his appointment, when compared to Benitez’s this time last year, highlights the stark contrast between Sunderland and Newcastle following our recent relegations to the Championship.

Time will tell if they can bounce back as we did, but given some people’s reactions to Grayson’s appointment, they’re not too optimistic..
