Sheffield Wednesday ready to meet £5.5m asking price for NUFC defender – reports

Sheffield Wednesday are ready to meet Newcastle’s £5.5m asking price for Grant Hanley according to the Daily Mirror today, who claim the Yorkshire side have been tracking the no nonsense centre-back for over a year now.

The Scottish International signed on Tyneside less than 12 months ago, but having went on to make just 16 appearances in all competitions last season, he has been told he can leave the club to find regular first team football after returning to pre-season training as our 4th choice centre-back.

Derby and Sheffield Wednesday were believed to have showed interest in the 25-year-old last month, however it was reported then that their £4m offers fell short of Newcastle’s valuation, with us understandably wanting to recoup the £5.6m paid for him from Blackburn last summer.

Now it seems like Sheffield Wednesday are ready to pay up and get their man in a deal that would make sense for all parties, providing a decent move for Hanley, with Wednesday likely to compete for promotion once again next season.

  1. Just getting our money back is a good deal. Hanley did his bit so thanks to him. Rafa is now tidying up the squad and creating room for higher paid players and bigger transfer fees. I don’t agree with all this fuss over lack of signings. Half our squad already have PL experience, it was ruined by that Macca numpty more than anything else. Atsu was a great buy and generally Rafa has been brill in the market. So be patient fellow fans, still much to look forward to……
