NUFC agree deal to sign former Arsenal defender – reports

Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign former Arsenal defender Stefan O’Connor on a two-year deal according to ESPN.

The 20-year-old became a free agent this summer following the expiration of his contract at the Emirates and The Chronicle had previously claimed on Monday that the 6ft 1′ defender, who can play at centre-back and right-back, had been offered to Newcastle.

ESPN claim that O’Connor has already linked up with Newcastle for pre-season training and Rafa Benitez has now decided to offer him a two-year deal at St James’ Park.

His release from Arsenal this summer ended his 7 year spell at the club after joining the Gunners from Crystal Palace as a 13-year-old.

O’Connor has represented England U-17’s and made just one senior appearance for Arsenal, coming on for the final 13 minutes in their 4-1 away win against Galatasaray in the 2014 Champions League group stages.

We know little about O’Connor, who is likely to be recruited for the U-21 set up, but if Arsenal ‘reject’ Isaac Hayden is anything to go by, it could be a shrewd buy.
