Newcastle United could be ready to reignite their interest in Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend, with Rafa Benitez keen to bring the former Mag back to the club once again this summer according to The Northern Echo.
We need wingers and it is no secret that Rafa Benitez is a big fan of Townsend, and clearly has one eye on being reunited with the 25 year-old after a failed attempt to sign him in January.
New Palace manager Frank De Boer has stated he wants to give everyone a chance in pre-season, however The Northern Echo reveal that Newcastle have “maintained a dialogue with officials at Selhurst Park” and readying a move for Townsend if there is any indication that they willing to do business.
Whilst I, like most fans, felt let down by him jumping ship following relegation, I would have him back in a heartbeat. He fitted in perfectly at Newcastle, providing the perfect blend of fight and flair, producing 4 goals and 3 assists in just 12 appearances in 2015/16.
We need proven Premier League players – those who know the league and know the club and Townsend fits that bill. I believe he would fit back in seamlessly.
The prospect of him and Matt Ritchie down the flanks is an exciting one, but it may all hinge on Palace’s willingness to sell.
I suppose I’d have him back, based on his ability rather than any sentiment toward the bloke himself.
I don’t care whether he (or anyone else) loves us. Let’s just get a few more quality players on board at this stage.
