Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that manager Rafael Benitez’s negativity is rubbing off on Newcastle United in the wrong way.
Newcastle United have endured a turbulent start to their Premier League campaign with two consecutive defeats and to add to their woes on the pitch, manager Rafael Benitez has indicated publicly that he has not been handed the required funds to strengthen his squad this summer.
While it is clear to see that Benitez needs to improve his ranks at Newcastle in order for the club to survive relegation this season, his complaints have not gone down well with the pundits and recently ex-Magpie Joey Barton had slammed the Spaniard.
Now even Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has gone on to question his former manager Benitez by stating that the 57-year-old’s negativity about not getting what he wanted in the transfer market is rubbing off on the entire club as well as the fans, and has urged him to make the best of what he has got at the moment.
Carragher said, “Rafa Benitez is a God really to Newcastle fans. They’re writing books about him, the way he brought them up, he’s integrated himself into the city with his work.
“But his negativity, I think, is rubbing off on the whole club. The supporters, all they’re chanting for is Rafa Benitez, there’s no players, so you can see how they feel about him but there’s got to be more of an upbeat mood.
“What he’s basically saying is the players he’s got aren’t good enough but 80-90 per cent of that squad, those are who you are going to need to keep you up. You need to somehow lift them as well, it’s far too negative and it has to change.”
