Newcastle defender Achraf Lazaar is set to stay at St. James Park despite a summer filled with speculation regarding his departure – according to the Shields Gazette.
Lazaar failed to impress for Newcastle United following his move from Palermo and this was due to the fact that he was involved in only nine games for the Magpies last season.
After clearly being deemed surplus to requirements, Lazaar was told earlier in the summer to seek for a new club by manager Rafa Benitez but he has failed to do so till now.
The interest on the defender was believed to be high, with the likes of Atalanta, Genoa and Brighton keen on the player and a move away from St. James’ Park for the defender seemed almost certain.
However in a strange turn of events, the Morocco international might well end up staying at Tyneside this summer as no club has come forward with a bid.
Newcastle have been short on left-backs this season, after Paul Dummett was injured on the opening day of the season, while backup Massadio Haidara is also on the treatment table.
Center-back Ciaran Clark has been currently covering in the position as Newcastle look into the market for a new left-back but if they fail to land somebody before the end of the summer transfer window in a couple of hours, Lazaar could well be called into action during the current campaign.
