According to reports, Newcastle United were on the verge of securing the services of Matt Targett from Southampton but the move evidently did not come into fruition.
Due to an injury crisis, Newcastle United were widely touted to bring in a new left-back to St. James’ Park on deadline day and it was widely reported that the Magpies had set their eyes on securing the services of Southampton defender Matt Targett.
Claims were being made that Newcastle had agreed a loan deal with Southampton over the signing of Targett but disappointingly, the move for the 21-year-old did not come into fruition before the deadline passed.
Now revelations can be made that Targett was set to board a plane to Tyneside to complete the move to Newcastle but the transfer was called off during the final hours of the deadline due to some unforeseen reason.
Missing out on Targett just serves to show how incompetent Newcastle United were during the summer transfer window and manager Rafael Benitez will surely have a tough time in sufficiently filling in the left-back position for the upcoming matches in the Premier League.
