Gateshead have announced former Newcastle United full-back Steve Watson as their new manager, following Neil Aspin’s departure for Port Vale last week.
The Heed lie in 16th place in the Conference – their lowest league position since September 2013 – and it had been reported last week that former Newcastle United head coach John Carver was being lined up to take over.
Watson, who played over 250 times in black and white, has been handed the role however, securing his return to the North-East – having originated from North Shields himself.

The 43-year-old is said to have beaten off competition from Craig Hignett and Alun Armstrong to land the post at the International stadium, having left his role as assistant manager at National League leaders Macclesfield Town to secure his first managerial job with Gateshead.
Good luck Steve!
