NUFC reporter confirms Benitez’s interest in in-form striker ahead of the January transfer window

An interesting nugget of information to share from The Chronicle’s NUFC reporter Chris Waugh today, who confirmed that Besiktas star Cenk Tosun is a player that Rafa Benitez IS looking at ahead of the January transfer window, revealing we have held ‘long term’ interest in the in-form striker.

The 26-year old has been in fine form for the Turkish champions, coming off the back of last term’s 24-goal haul with 14 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions for club and country already this season.

The update on our interest in Tosun arrived last night from NUFC journalist Chris Waigh, who said the following when asked about the striker in a live chat on The Chronicle’s Facebook page:

“My understanding is he is certainly a player they have looked at.”

“He is someone they’ve had a long term interest in.

“He’s the sort of striker Benitez needs – he knows the biggest problem with Newcastle at the minute is scoring goals.

“He wants to bring in some more firepower in January.”

Despite our very decent start, we’ve managed just 10 goals in 10 games this season, so it’s good to hear Benitez is actively pursuing such attacking player  – with Monday’s defeat at Burnley highlighting our lack of goals in the final third.

It seems Tosun he could be the man we turn to this winter if sufficient funds are made available to Rafa, making a potential takeover before January seem all the more important if we want to sign a genuine goalscorer.

He won’t come cheap mind, with the Turk’s stock rising every week he continues to find the net, with his four goals in four Champions League games likely to have gained him admirers all across the globe.

One to watch it seems! Here he is in action this season:
