Cenk Tosun is without doubt a name we’ve seen most prominently linked with a move to NUFC since the closing of the summer transfer window, and the Besiktas striker has done little to play down rumours of a potential move away in January, admitting he would ‘like to play in Europe’.
Newcastle United scouts are understood to have watched the Turkish striker on several occasions this season, with The Chronicle also revealing last week that he is a player the club have been watching for ‘some time’.
They won’t have been disappointed when they’ve gone to check him out either, with him scoring 10 goals in 15 games already for Besiktas this season (including 4 in 4 in the Champions League), showing no let-up in form following his impressive tally of 24 last term.
With Newcastle and Crystal Palace understood to have been watching him closely in recent weeks ahead of the January transfer window, here’s what he’s had to say to the Turkish press on the matter today:
“I love Besiktas, I really do. I’ve always wanted to play for this club and I’m living the dream.
“But in the right time, with the green light from our president, I’d like to play in Europe.”
Hardly what you want to hear if you’re a Besiktas fan desperate to keep a hold of your top scorer, is it?!
That being said, his superb form over the past 18-months means he won’t come cheap and you get the feeling this is a deal that’ll only be made possible on our side if a takeover happens before January.
He’s likely to cost in the region of £20m – meaning we’d more than likely have to break our club transfer record to sign him – and as the past has shown us, that isn’t the sort of deal Mike Ashley tends to sanction!
Interesting comments from the in-form Turkish striker nonetheless, but a deal that only seems possible if a takeover can be completed between now and January.
Here’s him in action – He can certainly strike a ball!
