Man Utd 4-1 Newcastle: Mistakes cost us a naive NUFC – but we weren’t all that bad?

Quality prevailed in the end as Man Utd ran out 4-1 winners, but I won’t be overreacting to today’s defeat.

We had a go and were every bit as good as the hosts for the opening 37 minutes. Gayle’s opener and first goal of the season gave us a deserved lead. Yes we were picked off from then on out, but at least we took the game to them in the first half – something quite a few fans wanted to see after a few too many toothless away performances is it not?

It didn’t work out, and our slightly more attack minded, 4-4-2 set-up meant we were far more open defensively as a result, but it’s sometimes worth giving it a go in search of three points, opposed to sitting back, never getting out of our own half and falling to a predictable defeat to nil?

Some perspective: Paul Pogba alone (£89m) cost more than our entire starting XI today (£75m)!

They’re the biggest spenders in the PL, are unbeaten in 37 at home & we’re a newly promoted side who put in a real strong showing in the first 37 minutes up until the equaliser.

Seeing Gayle get back on the scoresheet also good to see – making him the first player to score against them at Old Trafford in the league this season!

Yes we were a little too open at the back, but at least we had a go – even if we were punished for it at the other end as a result.

It’s disappointing how it panned out after going 1-0 up, but let’s stay positive ahead of a big game against Watford on Saturday.

Player ratings: (4-4-2) – Elliot (5) – Yedlin (7), Lejeune (6), Clark (6), Manquillo (5) – Ritchie (5), Hayden (5), Shelvey (7), Murphy (6.5) – Gayle (6.5), Joselu (5.5).

  1. First 30 mins we were excellent and could and arguably should have had another goal.

Although something to think about; We’ve lost 3 on the bounce. Before we lost the first of them 3 we were 6 points clear of the bottom 3. Were still 5 points clear. The teams at the bottom are really struggling too.

  2. 12 shots, 5 on target isn’t bad at Old Trafford imo. Not when you consider Man U themselves were 16 with 7 on target.

I guess when one team has Gayle, Joselu, Murphy & Ritchie and the other has Lukaku, Martial, Rashford and Pogba – that’s the difference.

I don’t think you can fault the effort of the players – Hayden had a great chance at 2-1 to level it up, but fired it down De Geas throat. Their 3rd was just Rashford & Pogba wanting it more. Tough game but we were never likely to take anything from Man U away like.

  3. Olly: why did you give Elliot a 5? There’s not a lot he could have done with any of the goals. Nobody mentioned that Smalling was marked by our 2 centre halfs for his goal. If you have 2 on 1 and they are your 2 tallest players at the back post he should not be scoring with a header, full stop.

  4. We have to take points from Watford and West Brom (who will probably be in turmoil. Who are they going to get if they sack Pulis? Look at Everton. They have been managerless for 3 weeks).

It is pretty obvious that we will suffer in away games against the top 6. This probably won’t even change if we get a striker in January. We might pick up scraps at home against them but everything depends on how we do against the other teams.

We knew this at the start of the season and it is panning out exactly as expected except we probably should have had a couple more draws.

  5. I am not sure that Palace are doomed yet. They are playing well without any luck. And I looked it up and Loftus-Cheek is a season long loan. He could make the difference.

I am not sure if there is a recall clause but Willian said it was madness that he is on loan. And Willian would probably suffer most for playing time if LC was back at Chelsea.

How come we never get any good loan players. Last one was Ben Arfa who broke his leg after a couple of games.

      (Quote)

  6. I am not sure if I agree with loans between teams in the same league. I remember Lukaku helping West Brom a couple of years ago and then Everton before he signed permanently.

I mean, the loans are usually from the big teams and could help teams avoid relegation by taking points off some of their rivals, and also affect the CL places. I am leaning towards that it is yet another way for certain teams to game the system.

You look at Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Chelsea know he is a good player and may tip the balance in a couple of games in London derbies. Nobody expected Palace to be this bad so it would not be beyond possibility for them to nick a point or 2 against Chelsea’s rivals.

  7. Of course I would change my mind if Liverpool loan us Danny Ings, but would be pissed off if they loan him to say, West Ham!!!

  8. There is not a hell of a lot to choose between the bottom 14 and I include Burnley in this because there is always a team that overachieves but they usually come back to the pack (Leicester excepted).

I would say the teams firing their managers, or the ones about to, are in big trouble because there are not the quality replacements out there. So that’s West Ham, Palace, Swansea and West Brom. Leicester have a good squad and Puel is a decent manager so I think they will be OK.

Then you have the promoted teams and usually one of them is I real trouble. Again, some teams have a good start but it usually doesn’t last.

Southampton look pretty **** as well.

  9. I don’t know what to make of Everton because I don’t think Rooney and Sigurdsson can play together. But how do you leave out the prodigal son or the 45-million-pound man?

You get what you pay for – that Pogba is an amazingly good player.

  11. Could of been 0.2 up if Murphy had had a little more luck , then they get two quick goals and we fell apart a bit at the back, missed Lascelles in that respect. Later on Murphy let fly with a sweet long range effort that deserved to go in really. Oh hum, it was as predicted in the end but the lads can be proud as they really put a shift in. We see so many teams go to OT and park the bus or look to snatch a goal on the counter. At least we made an effort to produce a contest and provide some entertainment . Desperately need to stop this mini slump asap, a point from Watford who look good and a win from hopefully the still poor baggies will help. Was hoping we could go into January with 20 points if possible.
Big pluses for me, Murphy finding his feet and not shrinking in the big game, nice to see when tackled off the ball he went and won it straight back, that’s what I was waiting to see, good stuff.
Gayle looking like his old self and Jonjo giving a captains display , playing with maturity when losing and not letting his petulant side surface.
Bad points, Ritchie going missing, he’s done that a few times now.
In between some nice passing we saw some hopeless long punts up field which will only work if you have the likes of mitro up front.

i was just goingto post the same comment, good summing up imo,but would add Hayden was a waste of space should have dragged him off

Sigurdsson must be one of the worse signing of the season at 45 mil hes done sweet fanny adams for Everton last couple of games hes been the worse player on the park

we have 9 games before the end of December so your hope of going into January with 20 points should be achievable.
However , I think that having 20 points from 21 games will have us struggling to keep 3 teams below us.

So, with an influx of cash set to be injected into the club, potential transfer funds will be a delight for Benitez’s future plans. The Spanish manager already has his eyes on a potential signing, reports suggest in The Sun that the prolific Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun has become of interest to the gaffer and his scouting staff

We will know after these two games whether or not we are in a relegation battle.

Good point mate, I think I am coming from the point of view that I wasn’t expecting our good start points wise and we have some hellish fixtures coming up. Watford, Chelsea , Leicester and the Gunners in the next 6 games followed by West Ham, Man City and Brighton where hopefully we can end December with 23 points .

Kimtoon: I think our centre backs had their worst game of the season, same with Manquillo. They really offered Elliot no protection. The problem was that they faced a different class of attacker and it didn’t help that Pogba had the best game I have seen him play for Man U.

Clark has done well in the past so I would stick with him if Lascelles isn’t fit. I think Mbeba should replace Manquillo as he has shown to be the better player. If Dummett is fit I would play him. I know a lot of people don’t rate him but that is based on him not offering much going forward. But we don’t play a wing-back system so let the winger do the creating and the defender do the defending. He is not a bad crosser though, he just doesn’t get down the line.

A point a game should keep us up. I know there is this mythical 40 point mark but in reality it has been about 37. to stay safe just bout every year. Wouldn’t mind 50 though as that would have got us 8th last year and is possible with a bit of investment.

Me too. His area in charge is way too small. For those slow high flying balls he should go out to collect it or at least pouch them back. No wonder Rafa wants another goalkeeper.

Kim we’ve got nothing to lose trying Freddie. Rafa clearly doesn’t rate Darlow and will sell him in Jan. If you’re good enough you’re old enough although traditionally the Spanish are slow to play kids and they rarely get a game younger than 21. And they’re kept on peanut wages.

  33. I hate some NUFC fans. There is a blog today showing twitter posts slamming Matt Ritchie as “showing no desire” at Old Trafford. My guess is that he is carrying an injury. I seem to remember something about an injury a couple of weeks ago. If not, he could be having a dip in form and the lad ran himself into the ground in the first 10 games when he was undoubtedly our best player. And wasn’t he player of the season last year. So a couple of bad games and these twitter tw@ts are on his back and writing him off.

      (Quote)

  34. Ritchie has been poor the last few games and it’s hard to identify why. I do remember last season though and the same thing happened – he went into his shell for 5 or 6 games then came back in storming form. Something in the stars maybe?

Dummett must be nearly fit by now. Somebody needs to put Manquillo out of his misery. He’s no left back that’s for sure. Surely Mbemba’s better than both.

Don’t know what Stavely et al are up to. There was a report they’re looking back at 27 years of accounts. The suspicion might be that we’ve been fiddling HMRC for that long. If that’s the case we can forget any takeover.

      (Quote)

  35. A tidy start, so close to going 2-0 up where, had we lasted to half time, we may have had a chance to get something after some tactical changes, but can’t really complain about losing at OT. We’ve had some good results against Manure in recent years but I don’t think our squad is much worse than those we’ve had, it’s just that the opposition now has quality in every area of the pitch after throwing money everywhere whilst we’re still left with a lower Prem/top Championship squad.

The attacking threat we showed was very pleasing and if Gayle has shaken off his rustiness hopefully we can get him the opportunities he needs to finish a move, rather than relying on him or Joselu to try and make their own chances.

  37. As usual we are in a bit of turmoil because Fatman is the owner and doesn’t relly know what he is doing, but at least Rafa does. The takeover rumours cannot be that distracting as everybody, including Rafa, sees it as a good thing. But there are other desperate clubs out there which makes me feel we will not be relegated. Plus there are the other 2 promoted teams and if past is prologue one or both will come back down to earth.

      (Quote)

  38. So what do we have:

Leicester – new Manager but Puel is decent and they have a good squad.

Palace – Mr Roy has them playing better but they aren’t picking up many points.

Everton – overrated squad and no Manager. Will poach Silva from Watford and buy a striker in January. Rooney was benched on Saturday and I expect that to continue with Silva in charge and their results to improve.

Watford – will soon lose their Manager. They are OK but not good enough to survive a **** appointment. They have had a manager merry-go-round so they would be total hypocrites to criticize Silva.

West Brom – Pulis out, in trouble.

West Ham – Moyes in, in trouble

Southampton – selling all their best players may finally come back to haunt them. Pelliegrino probably only 2 or 3 bad results away from the sack.

Huddersfield, Brighton and NUFC – so far so good. Management stability but very average squads so could easily be dragged into it.

  42. Kimtoon: West Brom supporters turned on Pulis because of his awful football so they probably wouldn’t take kindly to the Fat Toad. 46. Georgio: I mentioned that Clement would be sacked 2 posts earlier than my list when I was replying to Stuart. I think Swans are the team most likely to be relegated. Even more so than Palace and West Ham, although I worry with Moyes because he is such a misery. He may still have coaching ability but he spreads doom. His body language yesterday was like he was back at Sunderland – and this is his first fckin game.

      (Quote)

  47. Georgio: the point of my list was that the bottom 14 are in the same sort of boat with a few teams having a smaller bucket to bail with. I didn’t mention Burnley because they have amassed enough points already to surely be safe. But then I think about Ugly John. Dyche could move on and they might be stupid enough to make a Carver type appointment. Couldn’t happen!

      (Quote)

  48. Surely Ashley will recognise the huge risk he’ll take in dragging out negotiations, not supporting rafa and rafa’s consequent resignation would have on the club. If we bomb out of the league, with Ashley’s poisoned rep and our average squad with no real people to move on to make money for fresh signings we’re not just back to square one, we’ll be in a terrible financial state… Then again, when have his decisions ever made much sense?

Anyway, McKinness used to manage Bristol City, how was he? Currently manages Aberdeen in the Scottish Pub League. Not sure how that would translate to the PL and lightning is unlikely to strike twice (Fergie). Anyway, Fergie had won the title ahead of strong Celtic and Rangers teams and also the UEFA cup so there is really no comparison.

I don’t think they had a plan which is good news for us. The Chinese owner flew in on a previously scheduled visit and saw the Chelsea debacle and said fck this for a lark (or Chinese equivalent) and sacked Pulis without having a clue what to do next. That’s my take anyway.

Not possible you say. I refer you to the case of NUFC M’Lud where Pardew was on thin ice for months and the Management had not made any contingency plans except to have Ugly John as caretaker. Even Megson has more experience than the pickled walnut with hair!

The only explanation I can come up with the 27 years back is Ashley did not do due diligence before he came in. Maybe that is why Amanda wants to cover that period to see whether there was any potential liability.

But even myself don’t really buy it. I have a feeling Amanda is delaying it on purpose trying to seek a best timing for her to buy. If the team looks good, Ashley will ask for a high price. When the team looks doomed, Ashley may have to give up. Who knows!

    * Megson will be in charge of the Spurs fixture this weekend.

    * They want PL experience which rules out McInness and McNeil.

    * Ruled IN are Pards 🙂 Seriously.

    * Nigel Pearson who is currently at a Dutch second division side.

    * Martin O’Neil (did they see his Sunderland team)

    * No mention of Fat Sam

So, this could not be a better time to play them as any new Manager will only have like a day if they have any time at all. This new Manager bounce is overrated as well. It is just as likely to have no effect.

Pards would probably keep them up as he usually has a 1 year/18 month honeymoon before losing the players with his strange tactics and substitutions.
